The Middle Years Programme is an internationally recognized programme which encourages students to make connections between the different subjects studied and to look for links with the world around them. Students are required to study their mother tongue, a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology.
Teachers organize the curriculum through five areas of interaction (AOI). These are:
Approaches to Learning (ATL) looks at: How do I learn best? How do I know? How can I show my understanding to others?
Human Ingenuity (HI) looks at: Why do we create? How do we create? What are the consequences of what we create?
Environments (ENV) looks at: Where do we live? What resources do we have or need? What are my responsibilities?
Health and Social Education (H&SE) looks at: How do I think and act? How am I changing? How can I look after myself and others?
Community and Service (CS) looks at: How do we live in relation to others? How can I contribute to the community? How can I help others?
In the final year of the MYP, students are required to complete a personal project.
IGCSE
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a course that has been designed
for 14 to 16 year olds and aims to prepare pupils for further academic studies. It compliments the MYP as it draws on subjects from different areas such as Languages,Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics, etc.
Within the curriculum, and each subject, there is a balanced mix of practical experience and theoretical
knowledge. Differing abilities are accounted for with a choice of Core and Extended papers in most
subjects, making IGCSE suitable for all pupils. Even though all work is in English, the programme is also
suitable for pupils for whom this is not their first language, and this is acknowledged throughout the
examination progress.
